One Question at a Time: Turn AI Into a Better Study Partner

tgbadmin
A learner turns a question card in a library, representing step-by-step study with AI.

You ask AI to explain a difficult topic. The answer is clear, the example makes sense and you feel ready. The next day, you try to solve a similar problem by yourself-and get stuck.

That experience is familiar to many students and working professionals. Reading a good explanation can help, but it does not prove that you can use the idea on your own. A better way to study with AI is to make it ask you the questions.

This approach is becoming easier to try. ChatGPT offers Study mode, which can guide you with questions and hints. Google offers Guided Learning in Gemini, which breaks topics down and invites you to take part. You can also use the method in a regular AI chat with the right instructions.

Here is how to make your next study session more useful.

Change the request: from “explain it” to “test my thinking”

Suppose you are learning an Excel formula for work or preparing for a university exam in Bangladesh. A request such as “Explain everything about this chapter” can produce a long answer that is easy to read and easy to forget.

Instead, give AI a small goal: “Help me understand how to total sales for one city in a spreadsheet.” Tell it your current level, provide the relevant notes or a small example, and ask it to pause after every question.

Your role is to attempt an answer, even when you are unsure. The AI’s role is to give a hint, correct a misunderstanding, and then ask you to try again. That small pause is where much of the learning happens.

A five-minute example: learning SUMIF

Imagine a simple sales sheet:

  • Column A lists cities: Dhaka, Chattogram, Dhaka.
  • Column B lists sales in taka: ৳1,200, ৳800, ৳500.

You want the total sales for Dhaka. Asking AI for the formula immediately will give you an answer, but it skips the reasoning. Instead, ask it to coach you.

The first question might be: Which rows belong in the Dhaka total? You can work out that ৳1,200 + ৳500 = ৳1,700. The next question might be: Where will the spreadsheet look for the word “Dhaka,” and which cells should it add?

Now the formula has a purpose:

=SUMIF(A2:A4,"Dhaka",B2:B4)

The first range contains the cities, “Dhaka” is the condition, and the last range contains the values to add. Check the formula in your own spreadsheet. Then change one row or use a different city and see whether you can adapt it without help.

That final step matters. If you can only repeat the example AI gave you, you may have remembered the example rather than learned the method.

Copy this prompt for your next study session

I am learning [topic] for [exam, course, or work task]. My current level is [beginner/intermediate], and I have [number] minutes. Use the notes or example I provide as the starting point. Ask me one question at a time and wait for my answer. If I am wrong, give me one hint before showing the solution. After I get it, ask a new question that uses the same idea in a different situation. Finish with three short questions I must answer without hints. If a fact in my notes is unclear, tell me what I should verify.

You can add: “Explain in Bangla, but keep the technical terms in English,” if that helps you understand the subject. For an English-language exam, ask the AI to gradually switch the questions into English after you grasp the idea.

Where to try it

In ChatGPT, start a regular conversation and select Study. On the web, you can type @study or look for Study through the + menu; menu layouts can vary. OpenAI says Study mode is available across ChatGPT plans, including free access, though normal message and upload limits still apply. You can also use a regular chat and paste the prompt above. See OpenAI’s current instructions. OpenAI Help Center

In Gemini, look for Guided Learning on desktop or Learn on mobile, where available. Google describes it as a way to work through a subject with questions and step-by-step help. You can also paste the same prompt into a regular Gemini chat. Feature labels and limits can vary by account and device.

You do not need a paid AI plan to practise the core habit: choose a small learning goal, answer before asking for the solution, and check your understanding at the end.

Bring your own material – and check the answer

For a certification topic, use your official syllabus. For a university subject, use the assigned reading or your class notes. For Excel, test the answer in a real sheet with sample data. Tell the AI which chapter, page, or example to use, and ask it to say when the material does not answer a question.

AI can misread an uploaded page or confidently explain an incorrect fact. If an answer affects an exam, assignment, or work decision, verify it against the original material. Follow your institution’s rules for AI use in graded work, and avoid uploading private student or company information without permission.

The real test happens after the chat

At the end of a session, close the AI conversation for five minutes. Write down the idea in your own words. Solve one fresh problem, or explain the concept to a classmate or colleague. Then reopen your notes and check what you missed.

If you still need a hint, that is useful information. Ask AI to focus the next round of questions on the exact step that confused you. A good study partner helps you find the gap; it does not hide the gap behind a polished answer.

Learn the skill behind the tool

The results you get from AI depend partly on how you set the goal, provide context, ask for feedback, and verify the response. Those skills also matter outside studying—in research, writing, spreadsheets, and daily work.

Transfotech Global Bangladesh’s Prompt Engineering & Claude Cowork program teaches learners to write clear prompts, use AI tools for real tasks, and review outputs before relying on them. The course includes hands-on practice with free tools. Explore the page for current batch details.

Next time you open AI to learn something, try a different first sentence: “Ask me one question before you give me the answer.”
